Scotland are facing third placed Slovakia and have a two point gap over them.
The Slovaks now need other results to go their way as only the eight best runners-up from the nine European qualifying groups advance to the playoffs.
The national team needed a win to reach the knockout tie and were leading at half time but drew 2-2 in Slovenia to see their hopes of playing at Russian Federation 2018 end in bitter disappointment.
