Yogi Govt Reschedules Rahul Gandhi's Visit To Amethi, Citing 'Security Issues'

However, the party seems very reluctant to make Rahul Gandhi as Congress president immediately. This we have been listening for so many years.

Speaking to ANI here, Congress Uttar Pradesh president Raj Babbar said, "These are excuses".

October 2: Amethi's District Magistrate Yogesh Kumar on Monday clarified that he just asked to reschedule Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's visit to the district as the latter's security protocol is very high-level and they don't want to leave any loop holes. As soon as system gets over, obviously the new president will be elected.

"The Uttar Pradesh government is anxious and does not want Rahul to visit Amethi, fearing that he might raise issues directly related to the public".

Uttar Pradesh government "granted" permission to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to visit his parliamentary constituency, Amethi, on October 4, a day after the government asked Rahul to reschedule his visit by a day, citing administration's inability to provide him with adequate security.

The old guard of the party has been wary of Rahul's style of functioning - many party veterans who quit the Congress in the past three years, mostly to join the BJP, had blamed their decision on Rahul. The party's Central Election Authority (CEA) is finalising state lists of the electoral college for the election of party president. However, in times of a crisis within the party or when the Congress is trying to keep the Opposition parties united in an effort to take on the formidable BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, Sonia Gandhi has stepped in behind the scenes, and sometimes in public view, to project her party's stand. "Organisational elections of the Congress are underway and the new president could take over shortly after Diwali".

The organisational polls of Congress are now underway, Pilot said, adding that the grass-root level cadres have appealed the party to cause no further delay in Rahul's elevation to the top post.

Further taking a specific jibe at the rival BJP, Pilot added, "We will not form a margdarshak mandal to humiliate the senior leaders of of our party".
