Earlier, the National Assembly had passed the Elections Bill 2017, paving way for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to regain chairmanship of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
The amendment was made unanimously at a meeting chaired by party's interim president Senator Sardar Yaqub Nasir at Punjab House after it was moved by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, who is also the general-secretary of the party.
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) MNA and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Shah Mehmood Qureshi strongly opposed the bill.
It marks the formal process of re-electing Sharif as party president, the report said.
The party aims to restore the deposed premier as the party president after getting the Electoral Reforms Bill approved from the lower house of the parliament.
The party leaders expressed confidence and reaffirmed their trust in the party leader. "However, his children will not appear before the court", the ruling PML-N said.
Khan said Sharif was battling to assert "civilian supremacy" and boost democracy in a nation that has been beset by military interference in politics.
The Representation of Peoples Act 1976 bars anyone who is ineligible to become a member of parliament from holding office in a political party. But the vote was more of a formality as PML-N has a vast majority.
Meanwhile, members of the opposition chanted slogans against the bill aimed at benefitting one person, Nawaz Sharif.
On July 28, a five-judge larger bench of the Supreme Court, while disqualifying Sharif under Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution had asked the NAB to file four references in the Rawalpindi accountability court within six weeks on the basis of the material collected and referred to by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) as well as that already available with the Federal Investigation Agency and the NAB.
"I can not be a puppet interior minister", Iqbal said.
An Islamabad anti-corruption court which is hearing the corruption cases against Sharif and his family has already fixed October 9 as the date for their indictment.
"Two states can not function in one state", he said.
