The scoreboard nearly told a different tale, though, another glaring indictment of a Seahawks offense that couldn't reach the end zone until their season's 20th possession.
However, it was the drive that followed, the one that didn't result in points, that mattered most on Sunday afternoon.
On the very next play, Wilson threw the ball out to the left to tight end Jimmy Graham, who appeared to have an easy catch for another first down when safety Jaquiski Tartt came whizzing into the frame and delivered a jarring shot, which separated Graham from the ball as he fell to the ground with a thud. "Maybe not as sharp because the balls were (dropped)". "But more than all that, the way he competed down the stretch (made for) a beautifully played ballgame for us".
The Seahawks are aiming to avoid their second 0-2 start in three seasons, and coach Pete Carroll insists there is no reason to hit the panic button.
The run defense held its own as well until the game's final possession.
"In the locker room, we're talking about how the offensive line finished", Carroll said. "We just need to keep doing it; keep chopping wood is really what it takes".
Mission accomplished. With seven minutes left, he and QB Russell Wilson combined on a street-ball scramble for the Seahawks' first and only touchdown this season, a seven-yard pass that should have been stopped by the 49ers at several moments. The Niners gashed the Seahawks for 159 yards on just 20 carries. The Seahawks are tied for second with the most punts - 13 - through the first two games.
Offensively, the Seahawks are averaging 10.5 points and 268.5 total yards (158.0 in passing and 110.5 in rushing). Now he looks to rebound in one of the game's loudest venues and against one of its stingiest defenses. Reid pulled up in coverage on a third-down incompletion toward the other side of the field.
Brian Hoyer saw the same thing a lot of San Francisco 49ers fans saw Sunday. He was also sacked twice.
And C.J. Prosise dropped a pass from Wilson inside the five yard-line that may have gone for a touchdown. Instead, the 49ers had to settle for their third field goal of the game.
HOYER'S STRUGGLES: Hoyer's debut for San Francisco didn't go quite as planned. Jon's [Ryan] kicking was just extraordinary in terms of controlling field position in the game.
With Thomas Rawls (ankle) returning from a month-long absence, and healthy on the sideline, Carson - a seventh-round pick in this year's draft - led the Seahawks in rushing. They were incredibly responsible for the scoring drive, accounting for 27 yards on that series alone.
"Hoyer was provided solid protection for the majority of the game (under pressure in just five attempts) but was unable to find open targets, throwing for just 99 yards", wrote PFF.
Carlos Hyde had 102 yards by halftime and just 22 more after that, so it wasn't all great.
Carson was somewhat of an afterthought when the Seahawks chose him in the seventh round out of Oklahoma State. It will be while everyone wonders if this is the week the rearranged line will jell, and backs like Chris Carson figure out a way before the game is decided.
