McDermott spent the past six years of his now 19-year coaching career as Carolina's defensive coordinator. The Buffalo Bills head coach is spewing out all the coach-speak he can on the topic, claiming it will be just another game.
"It'll probably be a little different", McDermott said. "Just trying to lead this team in the right direction". ". That'll be, just from the human side of it, that'll be a little bit different".
It's tough to figure whether either side will have an advantage in this game based on their familiarity with each other.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Limiting Cam Newton's throws in practice - as happened on Thursday - will be the new weekly normal as the Carolina Panthers quarterback continues to recover from offseason shoulder surgery. McDermott's familiar with what the Panthers do as well as the Panthers knowing McDermott, who admits some adjustments will need to be made this week.
"More texts, you know just because of the nature of the season [with] how quickly things move with training camp and now the season", McDermott said. You know each week it's like, what did [Adrian Peterson] get, you know now it's like is Zeke playing, is he getting six games, is he not? I'm not out there playing defense.
Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane have been building the Buffalo Bills in Carolina's image and they'll get a chance to see how they stack up against the original model this week. "He has some groin soreness but it's nothing serious", said McDermott.
Both teams are coming off excellent defensive performances accomplished against awful offenses. Instead they won 23-3, but the game appeared to be a lot closer.
According to SportsBook Review, Panthers will be laying seven points at home to the visiting Bills.
Scouting EyeTall targetsBuffalo's secondary is going to be facing a big test, quite literally. RB LeSean McCoy had 159 total yards on 27 touches vs. Jets. Yet Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor trusts him around the goal line, which was evident in a one-yard receiving score a week ago.
On the other side, the Bills will be confronted with an actual National Football League quarterback in Cam Newton. Keep in mind that the two men running the Bills have Charlottean roots.
"It's a huge challenge", McDermott said of his old team's offense. I sent him a text shortly after our game before his game on the west coast. "We'll see what happens on Sunday this week".
McCoy had an outstanding game in Week 1, rushing for 110 yards on 22 carries and catching five passes for 49 yards during the Bills' 21-12 victory over the rival New York Jets. Who, you say? Taylor is a 7th year player out of Virginia Tech who has been pretty darn impressive in his two seasons as a starter in Buffalo. That's what we believe in, I don't factor those other areas into it. "We're focused on what we do and how we win".
- Leonard Johnson will play Sunday, per McDermott. Dareus was sent home hours before a preseason game at Baltimore on August 26 for violating a team rule. But he can make plays with his feet and he does own a strong arm. Though, to my eye, he didn't look like the same, normally athletically gifted player we've come to know over his time in Buffalo. "We want fresh bodies up front". He was brought in, to add some much-needed depth at the linebacker position. Jenkins played four years for the Dolphins and recorded 219 tackles.
Newton said he wasn't going to play favorites and insisted he would take what the defense gives him. FB Patrick DiMarco didn't have much of a role in the opener as he was on the field for only 26 percent of the offensive snaps. "Work as one unit", said Jones.
That included 38 rushes for 116 yards.
