The wrong kind of US Open history: Top 3 all miss cut

Sergio Garcia, of Spain, hits a drive on the 12th hole during the second round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Friday, June 16, 2017, at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

However, Round 3 of the U.S. Open obviously went to Justin Thomas. He outplayed his playing partners, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, during the first 36 holes, and he obviously knows how to win majors (2010 PGA Championship, 2014 U.S. Open).

It was the first time since the world ranking began in 1986 that the top three players missed the cut in any major.

Casey used a run of five birdies in a row on his way to a one-under 71 that tied him with overnight leader Fowler on seven under par and made him the clubhouse leader.

Eight of the top 12 players in the world won't be around for the weekend at Erin Hills, leaving a tournament as open as the land on which it was built.

The final pairing of Casey and Harman are scheduled to tee off at 2:29 p.m. (1925 GMT), but a forecast calling for the possibility of thunderstorms could disrupt third-round action. "I'm looking forward to my shot at it".

Leishman is in a share of 13th place, three shots off the pace.

Thomas poured in the eagle to become the 29th player with a 63 in a major championship. "It's still Saturday - 36 holes is a very long time in a U.S. Open". "It was a bit of a roller coaster", said Casey.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", Fowler said after his four-under 68 in the third round.

For now, fans continue to cheer on the best golf players in the world during the historic U.S. Open for Wisconsin.

Rickie Fowler produced a record-equalling low-scoring round to take a one-shot lead at the US Open on Thursday as the big-hitters failed to fire.

Rory McIlroy will miss the cut, but at least one of his U.S. Open records is safe - 35 consecutive holes without a bogey to start a U.S. Open.

Discussing his woes at the long 14th, Casey added: "It was all my own fault, but a good display of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did".

"This week I've been working with my coach, just sitting there and thinking, all right, let's go out and try to make a good golf swing and try to make a good putt".

Just like that, Casey is 4 over for the day and now five shots out of the lead. "I was upset with the score I had made, but it did not have any effect on my attitude or how I was going to then approach the rest of the round or the next shot".

For the second straight day, tragedy struck the 117th U.S. Open, when a 94-year-old man collapsed near the sixth hole at Erin Hills on Friday and later died. He missed the cut at last year's PGA and withdrew from this year's Masters after falling down a staircase. One example of that was Fowler hitting 3-wood into the green on the 632-yard 18th hole, with a breeze at his back.

Casey posted a one-under 71 to move to seven under, while Fleetwood and Americans Brian Harman and Brooks Koepka signed for 70s at Erin Hills.

Overall, McIlroy hit 10 of 14 fairways but clearly it was his second shot that was the root cause.

"I was in the hay too much over the last couple of days", Day said.

Day and McIlroy, just to name a few, might not make it that far.

"I'm sure mama's waiting for me to get home so I can help her out", Johnson said of his girlfriend, Paulina Gretzky. Not everyone can take advantage. Jason Day and Rory McIlroy also missed the cut, and this marked the first time the top three players in the world have all missed the cut in a major.
