Cars 3 speeds past Wonder Woman at North American box office

"Cars 3" is now on track for a $60 million debut despite opening against four other films this Father's Day weekend.

The threequel opened to an estimated $53.5 million from 4,256 theaters, enough to beat ruling champ Wonder Woman.

"Rough Night" will land in seventh for the weekend behind its fellow newcomers, "Wonder Woman", the second weekend of "The Mummy" ($13.9 million) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" ($8.5 million). Overseas, Cars 3 debuted to $21.3 million from its first handful of territories for a global start of $74.8 million.

The second official sequel in the "Cars" franchise is racing to a domestic debut in the high $50 million range, with potential to break the $60 million barrier thanks to Sunday's holiday.

A budget for "Cars 3" wasn't disclosed. Pixar has now had two films open on the bottom shelf of their portfolio in the last two years, as The Good Dinosaur opened to $39.2 million in November 2015.

"Cars 3" earned 21.3 million US dollars internationally, and the combined total income is 74.8 million USA dollars, according to studio figures collected by comScore. He enlists the help of a young race technician (voice of Cristela Alonzo) to help him get back in the game.

Released through Lionsgate, the movie was the number two ticket seller behind "Cars 2" on Fandango Thursday and Friday and then went and outgrossed "Wonder Woman" on Friday with $12.8 million (including $3.1 million in Thursday preview screenings) versus $10.8 million for the comic book icon. After ten days, the $190 million Mummy has possessed a meek $56.5 million domestically and is heading for a disastrous final haul of $75 million. The film came in ahead expectations with $27.1 million from 2,471 theaters. This image released by Sony Pictures shows Zoe Kravitz, from left, Jillian Bell, Scarlett Johansson, Ilana Glazer and Kate McKinnon in a scene from "Rough Night". The film generated an estimated $11.5 million, well above the predicted $6 million to $9 million, according to Box Office Analyst.

Also opening this weekend are raunchy female comedy Rough Night and shark thriller 47 Meters Down, which both look as if they will collect about $4 million each on Friday.
