Two children have been shot at an elementary school playground in Chicago. They younger girl was shot in the right thigh while the older girl was shot in the right hand. Johnson said, disgust evident in his voice. The girls were unintended targets, police said.
Chicago police are questioning persons of interest in a shooting that wounded two school girls at an end of year picnic.
Superintendent Eddie Johnson says the shooting happened around 1:30 p.m., shortly after school officials ordered some former students to leave the picnic area on the city's South Side. "I'm telling you, though, this makes me sick".
A very upset Mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke to reporters outside of the hospital where he met with family members of the two girls hit by bullets. The older students ran back to the picnic and the gunfire followed them.
The school has about 300 students in pre-K through 8th grade. They were both taken to Comer Children's Hospital and their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
According to a CNN tally, at least 16 people were shot in Chicago between 3 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday.
