The race is on Saturday, June 10.
No horse has dominated the 3-year-old ranks so far, leaving the 1-mile Belmont up for grabs among 12 horses that on Saturday will run the longest race of their lives.
"The distance, I was sure he could handle it", Ortiz said.
Race favorite Irish War Cry looked poised to win coming around the last turn. "My horse is doing well". If they made a decision to bring the horse, it's because they think he's able to win. "Fortunately, it all fell into place". Obviously the third leg of the Triple Crown always has a bit of intrigue due to the length of the race.
John Malone is chairman of Liberty Media Corp., whose holdings include Sirius XM radio and the Atlanta Braves.
The colt was the 4-1 second choice for the $1.5 million race.
Neither was Cloud Computing, which won the Preakness three weeks ago. Classic Empire, expected to be the favorite, had to be scratched earlier in the week due to a recurrence of an abscess in his right front hoof.
"He still wasn't quite ready", New York Racing Association senior vice president of racing operations Martin Panza said at the quarantine barn at 9:10 a.m. ET. "It was everything we talked about in the paddock before the race", Tapwrit trainer Todd Pletcher said. "We still have time, so we will give him the best care we can". So, that leaves Irish War Cry as the favorite for the Belmont Stakes.
Tapwrit, meanwhile, settled in third, right behind the dueling leaders. "Big Red", as he was known, became the ninth Triple Crown victor and the first for 25 years.
Approaching the sixteenth pole, Tapwrit moved toward the middle of the track and took the lead. Up front, Irish War Cry put away Meantime and appeared a likely victor at the top of Belmont's long stretch.
"At the eighth pole, I thought was might be home free", Motion said, "but it's the Belmont. It's a tough race". Patch, another Pletcher-trained horse, returned $6.50 to show. The ground will be very different this weekend from the sloppy surface she ran on last time out, but she should go on the forecast fast ground and I expect her to be fighting out the finish.
