While the internet lit up Wednesday night over a report linking Bulls head Fred Hoiberg to the open head-coaching gig at Ohio State, the Buckeyes were reportedly meeting with another option to succeed Thad Matta.
After Jent left the Cavs he became an assistant at Ohio State, where he worked for Thad Matta until 2013.
Ohio State is making a major change to its men's basketball program.
Matta coached the Buckeyes from 2005 to 2017 and took them to two Final Fours.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith wants to hire a new coach by the end of the week. He's led the Bluejays to the NCAA Tournament in four of those years including a first round loss to Rhode Island this past season when CU went 25-10.
"Due to coach Matta's release, and after talking with my family, I would like to announce that I will be re opening my recruitment", Ahrens said Tuesday in a tweet announcing his decision.
His teams won at least 20 games in 12 consecutive seasons.
The Buckeyes missed the NCAA Tournament last season after finishing 17-15. "But I'm head coach of the Bulls and have no intention of leaving".
McDermott tweeted shortly after noon Thursday, "I'm blessed and honored to be the coach at Creighton... and am looking forward to many more great years in Omaha!"
