Competing rallies in Portland following fatal stabbings

Late in the day, as the pro-Trump rally was coming to an end, police ordered counter-demonstrators to disperse from two adjacent parks, prompting some in the crowd to hurl rocks and other projectiles at officers. Police used tear gas and flash bangs to clear the area, KATU-TV reported. Several journalists at the scene said they were blocked in, along with demonstrators, and were told by officers that they were detained pending investigation for disorderly conduct.

The groups were separated by a wall of officers, heavily armed and wearing protective body armor, from local and federal police agencies.

Gibson told CNN that Patriot Prayer will have its own security at the rally.

Extra fuel was added to the fire when Mayor Ted Wheeler called on the federal government to revoke the already-issued permit for a group planning the Trump Free Speech Rally in Terry Schrunk Plaza.

City leaders questioned the timing of the rally so soon after the TriMet attacks.

"We don't want any fighting", said Margie Fletcher, the mother of a man wounded last week on a Portland train. "The city is in a very emotional state right now".

A demonstration called Defend Portland! The security team, he says, includes about 50 to 60 private individuals, some of with military experience.

Among other changes, they wanted police out of riot gear at political events.

To the north, hundreds of black-clad, left-wing, anti-fascist protesters chanted, blared music and held paper-mache spiders and skeletons, which have become signature icons at Portland protests.

"Portland, I mean no disrespect, but you've gotten insane", he said.

The rally kicked off at 2 p.m. with songs and a call by organizers for everyone in attendance to be respectful. They repeatedly praised the Trump administration.

"People are really aware of who's around them". They say those who have been identified as participating in criminal activity will be arrested. They also had to dodge balloons filled with a foul-smelling liquid, Fox 12 reported.
