London, Playing down the rumoured rift between India captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble, legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar said on Wednesday that some amount of misunderstanding between captain and coach is understandable. Sitting in India, it is not possible for the COA to understand what exactly went wrong between Kumble and the players, but it is believed that the players are not happy with his authoritative nature.
It is known that Moody and Rajput had applied for the top job past year also but it was Kumble, who got the nod. Ganesh has coached Goa for four years and is at present a selector for Karnataka in Indian domestic cricket.
Some of the BCCI officials had expressed displeasure over Kumble recommending a hike in the pay package of players in Grade A in BCCI's retainership as well as himself.
The post will fall vacant when Anil Kumble's term comes to an end after the Champions Trophy.
The situation seems to be murky than ever before for the Indian coach, though he might have become the Indian coach past year in June only.
One of India's biggest match-winners and a part of two- time World Cup winning team, Sehwag played 104 Tests and 251 ODIs for India scoring 8586 and 8273 runs respectively.
Earlier, BCCI's decision to not extend Kumble's contract shocked many as the team has been successful during his tenure. "The way the cricket set-up works in India is the coach is not the king". "He's been brilliant and he has played a major role in making me what I am today and I would like to thank him for that", said Harbhajan further.
Leaks to newspapers suggested that Kumble had sought higher pay packages for players in the national team as well as domestic teams, and the support staff. "We can all differ on how that but as long as our heart beats for Indian cricket, I think we should encourage", he said.
With Kohli still keen on having Ravi Shastri back, the BCCI seems to have sent feelers to the former India captain on whether he would take another shot. However, he has openly stated that he wants to be a "mentor" and not a coach.
The secretary dismissed suggestions that he and BCCI General Manager (Cricket Operations) M.V. Sridhar had arrived to engage in discussions with Kumble.
