AMD Details Ryzen Mobile, Threadripper, Radeon Vega, and Epyc at Computex 2017

"We've really thought about not just CPU performance, but the whole system", said Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, in a speech at Computex.

Machines powered by Ryzen include the Acer Aspire GX-281 desktop, the Asus Republic of Games Strix GL702ZC desktop replacement, the Asus G11DF Desktop, the Dell Inspiron Gaming desktop, the Lenovo IdeaCenter 720, the Dell Inspiron 27 7000 Series AIO and the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510. In the first part, enjoy a succession of PC manufacturers saying "we love the PC!" Jim Anderson, the head of the Computing and Graphics Group, said that Ryzen is also winning on "real user applications", which is debatable based on my testing versus Intel's Kaby Lake.

ThreadRipper will be an 18-core/32-thread CPU, supporting quad-channel DDR4 memory and with 64 PCI Express 3 (PCIe) lanes for communicating with the rest of the system.

The move comes as AMD tries to catch up to both Intel and Nvidia, who have left the chipmaker somewhat behind in both CPU and GPU departments, respectively. The APU versions will allow for sub-15mm thickness notebooks with 4C8T CPU sections and Vega graphics on-chip, according to AMD.

AMD's revitalization of ultra-premium PCs for the high-end desktop (HEDT) market was recently cemented with the announcement of Ryzen Threadripper, targeted at the world's fastest ultra-premium desktop systems, and scheduled for release this summer. At Computex apart from a few teasers of the vega graphics card AMD did not give out any new information on the new graphics card either. Intel fought back with its new Core X-Series announcement and the new $1999 flagship CPU with Core i9-7980XE. Numerous complaints leveled at Vega are similar to remarks made about Ryzen before it launched, and Ryzen has proven to be stronger than expected, not weaker.

Virtual reality demands the latest technologies for realistic VR experiences, and AMD announced that all Ryzen desktop processors are Oculus approved.

At Computex, AMD showed off Ryzen Threadripper running Blender alongside its upcoming Radeon Frontier Edition.

Beyond that, EPYC enterprise CPUs were given a Jun 20, 2017 hard launch date, and Radeon Instinct Vega "Redeon Vega Frontier Edition" workstation/enterprise GPUs were given a hard launch date of June 27th. "Our message is that for the true enthusiast-class performance capability this combination will be an incredible combination", said Su.
